FH Lecturer Participated in Problem Based Learning Training at Maastricht University Netherlands

Dr. Herlindah, S.H., M.Kn., a lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Universitas Brawijaya (FH UB) became one of the participants in the Program Based Learning (PBL) Training at Maastricht University, Netherlands. This activity was held by the Indonesian Legal Education Network (JAPHI) which was coordinated by Dr. Radian Salman, S.H., LL.M, a lecturer at the Faculty of Law Universitas Airlangga in collaboration with the Faculty of Law, Maastricht University, chaired by Dr. Sascha Hardt (s). The activity was held for five days starting from (30/9-4/10/2024).

According to Dr. Herlindah, the rapid development of information technology today is supported by the presence of AI (Artificial Intelligence) requires a special approach in the teaching and learning process in the classroom.

“The old way, such as listening to one-way lectures in class, will feel very boring. Various materials and assignments, just open a gadget or laptop, one click and you will get the answer. However, this method does not necessarily make students able to understand the law comprehensively and deeply and may not necessarily be able to apply it to real problems,” said Herlindah.

“In fact, law students are required not only to know what and where the rules are but also to understand how to use them and be accustomed to arguing and expressing their opinions. Therefore, using the Problem Based Learning (PBL) Approach can be an option,” she added.

Herlindah added that in the world of teaching, PBL is actually not something new but not all campuses use it. “Even in the Netherlands, only Maastricht University has fully used it and is consistent,” he said.

Through this program, participants carry out two forms of activities. First, sit in directly in the classes to be able to see firsthand how PBL practices are implemented. Second, attend workshops and training.

Workshop and Training Program Based Learning (PBL) Training at Maastricht University, Netherlands
In the workshop, participants evaluate and discuss directly what they witnessed during the sit in in the class. What the tutor does and what the students do to start and end the class.

The interesting thing is knowing what the tutor does in leading the class in certain situations. While during the training, participants are given training on how to prepare classes with the PBL method starting from compiling modules and managing the class.

Dr. Herlindah hopes that by participating in this activity, she can implement PBL starting with small classes in the concentration of Agrarian Law and Natural Resources and of course in the future can develop it with other lecturers institutionally and widely. (rma/FH PR/ UB PR/ Trans. Iir)
